Often a user can replace two or three old arrays that are going to have their support EOL with ONE new array and the new arrays are so much more powerful that they more than make up for several older ones. New Equallogic arrays can enter an existing group. You don t want it in the same group as your other supported arrays because the storage is virtualized and having an unsupported array in the mix is just not a safe thing to do. When an array's support EOL's, using it for test or non-critical purposes is a nice idea. Hey montreal, i want to ask you something. Even SLA's from the non-tier one's are worthless. They also sell that as "non-disruptive upgrades" The default assumption with storage vendors is that they are lying. It would be "idiotic" to think that there was production data on that array under that circumstance. Now, pay attention to the part about this not being a normal situation for someone trying to do the firmware update so they can recycle an old array to install new 2TB drives (in an officially unsupported configuration). While I dislike the practice to no longer provide extended support for hardware that was sold as "forever upgradeable", I do understand why they want you under support to undertake such an upgrade on a SAN that is in production. I've seen upgrades go south, and without support your taking a lot of risk. It takes about 7 hops.ĭoing 7 upgrades on an out of support SAN with production data is what I would call "idiotic". Make sure you pay lots of attention to the supported upgrade paths to get from v3 up to v6 firmware. It can get a little dicey and someones data is potentially at risk (not an issue recycling an old array, but that isn't' a "normal" thing you are doing). It was an explanation that you can't discuss non-licensed software in this forum per the rules.īTW, running one out of support node in a cluster, invalidates support for the cluster, so upgrading an old unit and peering it with a new unit is a "bad idea" (TM).īTW, I don't exactly love Dell for their support policy, but for these firmware upgrades I sorta understand why you'd want to require support to access the firmware. So John if you can't help then why post an idiotic reply? I'll tell you what, go pay $30K for a car and in 5 years I am gonna tell you that you can't fix it cause it's "end of life"!!! NO PARTS FOR YOU!!!!! Your entitled to nothing not in your contract, and its by the Grace of Dell (other closed storage platform vendor) if you get anything else. Dell offers longer support on the Compellent's I believe, or you could have chosen an open storage platform (like a R720) that you can get software and hardware fixes beyond the normal service life through 3rd parties. You traded increased risk (not having support) for cost. You saved money up front buying a product with a shorter service life. Part of the reason some people buy Cisco 6509's is because Cisco promised a 20 year service life. Servers go EOL, Switches go EOL, hell my phone system even has an EOL date. (Honestly storage is worthless at that point but thats another thing). If you want something you can support for 8 years, I'd recommend HDS/EMC. Just cause I didn't update the SAN within the support contract's life shouldn't mean I can't have access to them.ĥ years is a long life for a low to medium end storage product honestly. I think after paying for a device and having a support contract for it and they when Dell won't support it anymore, they should give me the firmware updates anyways. Legally? After paying $30K for a device it's useless after 5 years?ĭell won't give me a support contract since "they" deem it's end of life. :) i could give you 3 mountain sheep and one kind of older LLama with a missing tooth. i just would like to have a better running os on it, any one know how i could find version 4.X for this unit. Look lets be honest this baby is end of life big-time, i am using unsupported drive like most people, using it at home, not production line high availability, death if data is lost type of system. but i cant get an account with out contract. so i know i should update the version of software, this way it will stop taking one of my disks off line telling me that its bad, Known issue from what i have read, corrected in version 4. and if i did, because i use larger that 750 Gig drives it would not be supported. I am using this unit in my house, I do a lot of live music recording for fun and i use it for storage of the works in progress, nice product for what i am using it for.īut i don't think i can buy a support contract for this unit. I have gotten a hold of a ps100 and i have added 1TB drives and its working great.
